Choreographer Mark Taylor admits he hadn't seen theatrical tango dancing before he created this work. He was inspired by a series of photographs of performers dancing tango, and began with those images. In the studio, Mark tried to imagine what the transitions must be from one pose to another, and that helped create the movement vocabulary. (Only later, after watching a production of Tango Argentino, did he realize that his basic instincts were correct, but that theatrical tango moved much faster than he had imagined.)

In the role of the Lecturer, who presents the history with the aid of a 'kinetoscope' to show examples, is Lynne Cullen, a popular Pittsburgh host on KDKA radio and television. Hair styles were created by Pittsburgh stylist Philip Pelusi.

Note on the video: the audio for the Lecturer's interludes are quite soft—you might need to raise the volume in order to hear. However, the musical selections are much louder, so you may need to reduce the volume for those.
